NCBI Summary for CDHP
This gene encodes a calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion protein containing five cadherin domains. The encoded protein plays a role in epithelial outgrowth, such as that which occurs during the development of hair follicles and limb buds. Loss of function of the related gene in humans results in ectodermal dysplasia, ectrodactyly, and macular dystrophy and congential hypotrichosis with juvenile macular dystrophy. This gene is located in the vicinity of similar cadherin genes on chromosome 8. The proprotein is further cleaved into a functional chain. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Mar 2013]
UniProt Comments for CDHP
CDH3: Cadherins are calcium dependent cell adhesion proteins. They preferentially interact with themselves in a homophilic manner in connecting cells; cadherins may thus contribute to the sorting of heterogeneous cell types. Interacts with CDCP1. Expressed in some normal epithelial tissues and in some carcinoma cell lines. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.
Protein type: Cell adhesion; Membrane protein, integral; Motility/polarity/chemotaxis
Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 8 D3|8 53.16 cM
Cellular Component: cell-cell adherens junction; cytoplasm; integral component of membrane; membrane; plasma membrane
Molecular Function: calcium ion binding; metal ion binding
Biological Process: cell adhesion; hair cycle process; homophilic cell adhesion; keratinization; negative regulation of catagen; negative regulation of transforming growth factor-beta2 production; positive regulation of gene expression; positive regulation of insulin-like growth factor receptor signaling pathway; positive regulation of keratinocyte proliferation; positive regulation of melanin biosynthetic process; positive regulation of monophenol monooxygenase activity; retinal homeostasis; Wnt receptor signaling pathway through beta-catenin
