NCBI Summary for AQP9
This gene encodes a member of the aquaglyceroporin subfamily of aquaporins. This protein transports water, glycerol, urea, purines and pyrimidines and plays a role in glycerol metabolism and osteoclast differentiation. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Dec 2012]
UniProt Comments for AQP9
AQP9: Forms a channel with a broad specificity. Mediates passage of a wide variety of non-charged solutes including carbamides, polyols, purines, and pyrimidines in a phloretin- and mercury-sensitive manner, whereas amino acids, cyclic sugars, Na(+), K(+), Cl(-), and deprotonated monocarboxylates are excluded. Also permeable to urea and glycerol. Belongs to the MIP/aquaporin (TC 1.A.8) family.

Research Articles on AQP9
1. AQP-7 and -9 showed differential staining pattern in different stages of mouse estrus cycle. AQP-7 and -9-mediated glycerol transport in tanycyte cells might be under hormonal control to use glycerol as a potential energy substrate during mouse estrus cycle.
