NCBI Summary for TRPA1
The structure of the protein encoded by this gene is highly related to both the protein ankyrin and transmembrane proteins. The specific function of this protein has not yet been determined; however, studies indicate the function may involve a role in signal transduction and growth control. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
UniProt Comments for TRPA1
TRPA1: Receptor-activated non-selective cation channel involved in detection of pain and possibly also in cold perception and inner ear function. Has a central role in the pain response to endogenous inflammatory mediators and to a diverse array of volatile irritants, such as mustard oil, garlic and acrolein, an irritant from tears gas and vehicule exhaust fumes. Acts also as a ionotropic cannabinoid receptor by being activated by delta(9)- tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component of marijuana. Not involved in menthol sensation. May be a component for the mechanosensitive transduction channel of hair cells in inner ear, thereby participating in the perception of sounds. Probably operated by a phosphatidylinositol second messenger system. Belongs to the transient receptor (TC 1.A.4) family.
Protein type: Membrane protein, integral; Membrane protein, multi-pass
Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 8q21.11
Cellular Component: integral component of plasma membrane; plasma membrane; stereocilium bundle
Molecular Function: calcium channel activity; calcium-release channel activity; channel activity
Biological Process: cell surface receptor signaling pathway; detection of chemical stimulus involved in sensory perception of pain; detection of mechanical stimulus involved in sensory perception of pain; ion transport; protein homotetramerization; release of sequestered calcium ion into cytosol; response to cold; response to drug; response to hydrogen peroxide; response to organic cyclic compound; response to organic substance; response to pain; sensory perception of pain; thermoception
Disease: Episodic Pain Syndrome, Familial, 1
Research Articles on TRPA1
1. neuronal effects of vinca alkaloids require the transient receptor potential ankyrin-1 (TrpA1) channel, and the hypersensitization to painful stimuli in response to the acute exposure to vinca alkaloids is reduced in TrpA1 mutant flies and mice. These findings demonstrate the direct excitation of sensory neurons by CIPN-causing chemotherapy drugs, and identify TrpA1 as an important target during the pathogenesis of CIPN
